Kenya Travel Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT KENYA?

Kenya is a year round destination with some of the best game viewing activities. No matter what time of the year you visit, you are bound to have an unforgettable experience depending on your interests and sense of adventure. Weather is a major factor in deciding when to travel. However, unlike places like Europe where there are four clear cut seasons, weather in Kenya is not uniform and changes from region to region depending on geographical features. As such, it is important to visit when you can maximize your experience by taking in as much of the country and its beauty as you can. Regardless of the season however, Kenya is always ready with something new and exciting.

January – February: These are relatively hot months, and the ideal time to explore Kenya’s beautiful sand beaches at the Coast. Spoil yourself with a tan, cool evening walks in the evenings or early mornings, a good swim or take part in assorted water sports.

March – May: This is the rainy season which offers something different. This is also the off peak season and the best time to visit Kenya for those who prefer a little less crowding and less expensive safaris. It is also the calving and nesting season; pasture is abundant so animal concentrations are at their highest. The rainy season would also be a good time to tour the famous Lake Nakuru National Park, carpeted by thousands of lesser flamingoes that call it home.

June – October: The dry season starts here and is considered the best time to visit Kenya. Topping the list of attractions during this period is a visit to Maasai Mara for the annual wildebeest migration. Other than this, it is also a good time to visit other national parks to see a greater variety of animals. Dusk and Dawn game viewing is the most popular during this season.

September – October: This is the ideal time for mountain climbers and hikers because of the suitable weather (not so hot, not so cold).

November – December: This is the short rains season with temperatures being relatively cool. You can try any activity such as a wildlife safari, mountain climbing, birding or visit the beach, among others.

For those interested in cultural and community tours, anytime of the year is good for a cultural safari.

ARE THERE SET DEPARTURE DATES FOR SAFARIS?
Jungle Beach Safaris makes your dates of travel very flexible to accommodate your program of travel. These tailor made safaris do not have set departure dates, but will rely on the dates that the client is available for travel. For group safaris, there are set departure dates which depend on the number of people available. These normally include daily departures and weekly departures. These are suitable for solo people who wish to join a group and travel with others to cut on the cost of the trip and also for company.

FOR A GROUP SAFARI, WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THERE IS NO SET DEPARTURE DATE ON MY DESIRED DATE OF TRAVEL?
Should there be no set departure on your desired date of travel, we shall give you the next available date either earlier or later as long as you give us the alternative range.

SHOULD I TAKE TRAVEL INSURANCE BEFORE TRAVELING TO KENYA?
It is highly recommended that you take out travel insurance at the time of confirming your travel booking to Kenya. This should cover any medical situation (such as hospitalization), as well as cancellation or curtailment of arrangements and loss of your baggage. When you travel with Jungle Beach Safaris, you are given the chance to take our emergency evacuation insurance at an extra cost quoted on request basis. This provides emergency medical services/evacuation to hospital should you suffer either severe illness or an injury whilst travelling with us. As this is for emergency evacuation only, it does not cover the cost of treatment once in hospital and in no way replaces your normal travel insurance, which must be purchased prior to travel.

DO I NEED A VISA TO TRAVEL TO KENYA?
Visas are compulsory for all visitors, including those from countries that were previously exempt, such as the USA, UK, Germany and Belgium. Visas may be applied for at a Kenyan embassy in your home country or upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta Airport. However, it is recommended that visitors obtain their visas prior to arrival to avoid the possibility of long queues at the airport. Passports are required by all foreign visitors and must be valid for six months beyond the intended length of stay. Please ensure that there are sufficient blank pages for your visa as well as for entry stamps upon arrival.

WHAT TYPE OF ACCOMMODATION DO YOU OFFER?
Jungle Beach Safaris will offer you any type of accommodation depending on your budget and preference. In the different national parks and reserves in Kenya, there is a wide range of accommodation such as luxury, semi luxury and budget beach resorts; luxury and semi-luxury lodges and camps; budget lodges and tented camps; backpacking or fly camping. Hotels, guest houses, youth hostels, homestays and cottages are also booked on request. All these are available for the client and need to be booked well in advance to avoid disappointments upon arrival.

For clients with special needs (e.g. disabled guests, unaccompanied children, special diets, infants and small children, health requirements, e.t.c.), please let us know well in advance so that we can ensure that your hotel and your safari guide is aware.
