Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Samburu National Reserve

Leave Nairobi early in the morning and drive north to Samburu on the south bank of the Uaso Nyiro River, downriver from Archer’s Post. North of the Equator some of the animals and vegetation are a little different from those commonly found south. Elephant, black rhino, lion, buffalo and cheetah and the usual buck and antelopes are common to both north and south of the equator. However unfamiliar animals are the Grevy’s zebra, the reticulated giraffe and the Somali ostrich. There is also the long neck gerenuk, Beisa Oryx, and hunting dog. Crocodiles in the river can be seen from the lodge/tented camp. The vegetation is usually dry grass with a few swampy patches. There is some forest cover along the Uaso Nyiro River and an abundance of doum palms.

Day 2: Samburu National Reserve

Another day in this harshly beautiful terrain where wildlife abound especially near the river which is their only source of drinking water. The Uaso Nyiro River flows gently through the dry landscape sustaining life in this harsh land. Shaba National Reserve is where the famous conservationist George Adamson did his research on lions. Lunch and an afternoon of leisure at the pool.

Day 3: Samburu- Lake Nakuru National Park

After breakfast, depart for Lake Nakuru National Park making a brief stop at Thompson Falls which is at an altitude of 7,738 feet. The falls are named after the Scots explorer Joseph Thompson who was the first European to discover the falls in 1884. Lunch will be at your lodge. Arrive late afternoon in Nakuru where you will enjoy a game drive in this Park which is truly a bird watchers paradise. The game animals include hippo, waterbuck, gazelles, colobus monkeys, bufallos, leopards and Rothschild Giraffe. It is also a sanctuary for the white rhino. The Park has an abundance of acacia trees, both yellow barked (fever tree) the umbrella -topped acacia and the candelabra cactus.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru – Maasai Mara National Reserve

After breakfast, proceed to Masai Mara National Reserve which is arrived in time for lunch at the camp. Enjoy a late afternoon game drive in this park which is famous for huge black -manned lions. This reserve has a hilly savanna rolling grasslands, gallery forest on the Mara River and its tributaries. The smaller predators are the hyena and jackal. The large herbivores are the elephant, rhino, Burchell’s zebra,hippo,buffalo and giraffe, The smaller herbivores are antelopes and bucks. The Maasai ostritch, the world’s largest bird is found in the park.

Day 5: Maasai Mara National Reserve

A full day early morning and afternoon game viewing and exploration in this part of the Northern Serengeti Ecosystem where the great wildebeest migration takes place. Months before the actual migration the herds ‘assemble’ in Serengeti in readiness for the crossing into the Masai Mara. The plain is literally covered with these animals. Grunts and other animal sounds are heard, and territorial fights are common place. The migration now declared the Seventh Wonder of the World takes place from end of June to beginning October.

Day 6: Masai Mara- Nairobi

After breakfast, you will return to Nairobi via the Mau Escarpment. Having just crossed the Rift valley and passed Mt. Longonot it would be interesting to view the crater from a different angle, via the tip. Arrive Nairobi in time for lunch at a local restaurant (on own). Later drop off at the hotel. The rest of the afternoon will be at leisure at the hotel. Dinner will be on own.

Day 7: Nairobi – Amboseli National Park

After breakfast, depart the city of Nairobi for Amboseli. You will drive across the Athi Plains where the Maasai once roamed fearlessly mingling with the game animals, zebra giraffe, antelope and lion, grazing their livestock. Clumps of acacia grow along the Athi River and Giraffe may sometimes be seen at a distance feeding on the upper branches. Lunch is at your lodge. An afternoon game drive will introduce you to the beauty of this Park which lies in the shadow of Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro. Return to your lodge at sunset to watch a spectacular African sunset.

Day 8: Amboseli National Park

Full day early morning and afternoon game viewing in the area of Lake Amboseli, which is a wide salt pan, consisting of permanent swamps which will further introduce you to the Park. This area has much game, large and small. Elephant, rhino, buffalo, Burchell’s zebra, eland, Masai giraffe and small species of the antelope family, the common water buck, klipspringer, Grant’s gazelle, impala, topi, and the diminutive duiker among others.

Day 9: Amboseli – Tsavo West National Park
After breakfast, drive to Tsavo West National Park. This park is the largest national park in Kenya – 20,567 square kilometres. It is partly hilly and even mountainous. One of its interesting features is Mzima Springs. Clear, clean water comes from the Chyulu Hills goes underground then surfaces in the form of springs. The hills are volcanic with black lava. Lunch and dinner will be at the lodge. Later enjoy an afternoon game drive.

Day 10: Tsavo – Nairobi
After breakfast, return to Nairobi via the main Mombasa-Nairobi highway reaching in time for lunch which will be on own. Later you will be transferred to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your outbound flight. (B)
