Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival Nairobi
On arrival into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you are met by our airport representative and transferred to
Nairobi Serena. Rest of the day at leisure. Optional excursions can be booked and paid for locally.

Day 2: Samburu National Reserve

After breakfast, an early start for the drive north to Samburu on the south bank of the Uaso Nyiro River, down river from Archer’s Post. North of the Equator some of the animals and vegetation are a little different from those commonly found south. Elephant, black rhino, lion, buffalo and cheetah and the usual buck and antelopes are common to both north and south of the equator. However unfamiliar animals are the Grevy’s zebra, the reticulated giraffe and the Somali ostrich. There is also the long neck gerenuk, Beisa Oryx, and hunting dog. Crocodiles in the river can be seen from the lodge. The vegetation is usually dry grass with a few swampy patches There is some forest cover along the Uaso Nyiro River and an abundance of doum palms.

Day 3: Samburu National Reserve
Another day in this harshly beautiful terrain where wildlife abound especially near the river which is their only source of drinking water. The Uaso Nyiro River flows gently through the dry landscape sustaining life in this harsh land. Shaba National Reserve is where the famous conservationist George Adamson did his research on lions. Lunch and an afternoon of leisure at the pool or another game drive in the late afternoon.

Day 4: Samburu–Mount Kenya
After breakfast, depart the dry regions of northern Kenya to the lush greens lands of the central highlands home to the highest mountain in Kenya to arrive at the Mount Kenya National park. Arrival will be in time for lunch at Serena Mountain Lodge. The afternoon is spent comfortably watching the forest animals that come to the waterhole and salt lick. In the early evening the waterhole is floodlit so that the tourist is able to watch in silence and undercover. As night falls the place gets crowded with large and small forest animals

Day 5: Mount Kenya -Lake Nakuru
After breakfast, drive past the northern tip of the Aberdares to descend into the Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park. Lake Nakuru, the alkaline lake, is the breeding ground for the algae on which the thousands of flamingos live. The park is home to a variety of buck and antelopes, the Burchell’s zebra, Rothschild giraffe, buffalo and even leopard has been sighted here. It is now a sanctuary for the white rhino.

Day 6: Lake Nakuru -Maasai Mara National Reserve

After breakfast, proceed to Masai Mara National Reserve which is arrived in time for lunch at the camp. Enjoy a late afternoon game drive in this park which is famous for huge black -manned lions. This reserve has a hilly savanna rolling grasslands, gallery forest on the Mara River and its tributaries. The smaller predators are the hyena and jackal. The large herbivores are the elephant, rhino, Burchell’s zebra,hippo,buffalo and giraffe, The smaller herbivores are antelopes and bucks. The Maasai ostritch, the world’s largest bird is found in the park.

Day 7: Maasai Mara National Reserve

A full day early morning and afternoon game viewing and exploration in this part of the Northern Serengeti Ecosystem where the great wildebeest migration takes place. Months before the actual migration the herds ‘assemble’ in Serengeti in readiness for the crossing into the Masai Mara. The plain is literally covered with these animals. Grunts and other animal sounds are heard, and territorial fights are common place. The migration now declared the Seventh Wonder of the World takes place from end of June to beginning October.

Day 8: Depart

After breakfast, you will return to Nairobi via the Mau Escarpment. Having just crossed the Rift valley and passed Mt. Longonot it would be interesting to view the crater from a different angle, via the tip. Arrive Nairobi in time for lunch at a local restaurant (lunch on own). Later you will be transferred to JKIA for your onward flight. (B)
