Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival Nairobi

On arrival into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you are met by our airport representative and transferred to your hotel. Rest of the day is at leisure. Optional excursions can be booked and paid for locally.

Day 2: Nairobi – Samburu National Reserve

After breakfast, depart Nairobi and drive north to Samburu on the south bank of the Uaso Nyiro River, downriver from Archer’s Post. North of the Equator some of the animals and vegetation are a little different from those commonly found south. Elephant, black rhino, lion, buffalo and cheetah and the usual buck and antelopes are common to both north and south of the equator. However unfamiliar animals are the Grevy’s zebra, the reticulated giraffe and the Somali ostrich. There is also the long neck gerenuk, Beisa Oryx, and hunting dog. Crocodiles in the river can be seen from the lodge/tented camp. The vegetation is usually dry grass with a few swampy patches. There is some forest cover along the Uaso Nyiro River and an abundance of doum palms.

Day 3: Samburu National Reserve

Another day in this harshly beautiful terrain where wildlife abound especially near the river which is their only source of drinking water. The Uaso Nyiro River flows gently through the dry landscape sustaining life in this harsh land. Samburu National Reserve is where the famous conservationist George Adamson did his research on lions. Lunch and an afternoon of leisure at the pool.

Day 4: Aberdares /Mount Kenya (Tree Hotels)

After breakfast, drive to the fast growing market town of Nyeri in time for lunch. This is where Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boys’ Scout movement spent the last years of his life. He is buried in a cemetery just outside the town. After lunch at the base hotel, drive through to the tree hotel where you spend the afternoon comfortably watching the forest animals that come to the waterhole and saltlick. In the late afternoon the waterhole is floodlit so that the tourist is able to watch in silence and undercover. As night falls the place gets crowded with large and small forest animals. In the case of Serena Mountain Lodge you arrive directly at the lodge for lunch.

You are required to pack an overnight bag when you transfer to the Ark or Treetops for the night.

Day 5: Tree Hotel -Lake Nakuru National Park

After breakfast, depart for Nakuru via Thompson’s Falls which is at an altitude of 7,738 feet. The falls are named after the Scots explorer Joseph Thompson who was the first European to discover the falls in 1884. Lunch is at your lodge. Enjoy an afternoongame drive at Lake Nakuru National Park. This Park is truly a bird watchers paradise. The game animals include hippo, waterbuck, gazelles, colobus monkeys, bufallos, leopards and Rothschild Giraffe. It is also a sanctuary for the white rhino. The Park has an abundance of acacia trees, both yellow barked (fever tree) the umbrella -topped acacia and the candelabra cactus.

Day 6: Nakuru – Masai Mara National Reserve

After breakfast, proceed to Masai Mara National Reserve which is arrived in time for lunch at the camp. Enjoy a late afternoon game drive in this park which is famous for huge black -manned lions. This reserve has a hilly savanna rolling grasslands, gallery forest on the Mara River and its tributaries. The smaller predators are the hyena and jackal. The large herbivores are the elephant, rhino, Burchell’s zebra,hippo,buffalo and giraffe, The smaller herbivores are antelopes and bucks. The Maasai ostritch, the world’s largest bird is found in the park.

Day 7: Maasai Mara National Reserve

On this day you will enjoy a full day early morning and afternoon game viewing and exploration in this part of the Northern Serengeti Ecosystem where the great wildebeest migration takes place. Months before the actual migration the herds ‘assemble’ in Serengeti in readiness for the crossing into the Masai Mara. The plain is literally covered with these animals. Grunts and other animal sounds are heard, and territorial fights are common place. The migration now declared the Seventh Wonder of the World takes place from end of June to beginning October.

Day 8: Depart

After breakfast, you will return to Nairobi via the Mau Escarpment. Having just crossed the Rift valley and passed Mt. Longonot it would be interesting to view the crater from a different angle, via the tip. Arrive Nairobi in time for lunch at a local restaurant (lunch on own). Later you will be transferred to JKIA for your onward flight. (B)
